When I was ten, I got the privilege of discovering that I was near-sighted. I have worn corrective lenses ever since. For thirty years now I have worn glasses and contact lenses. Many of my friends have chosen to get laser eye surgery. This was not an option for me; not only can I not afford it, but I am too much of a wuss to have unnecessary surgery. Therefore, glasses it is.

I am fortunate that my health insurance covers an eye exam and lenses each year. Unfortunately, I always have to choose between glasses or contact lenses. So, for the past seven years I have chosen the contacts. I have had the same pair of glasses since. Needless to say, it was time for a new pair. When I discovered that Coastal lets you get the first pair of glasses free, I did a little dance. (I did have to pay for shipping.)

Steaz Beverages

I love a good cold drink. Here in the desert, a thirst quenching tea is almost a must. So when I got the opportunity to review Steaz Iced Teaz, I was very excited.
 I went to the store armed with my coupons, ready to buy. But, they were not at my local grocery store, even though they are listed to be sold there. But, not to be deterred, I went to Whole Foods and found them there. And boy am I glad that I did!

 All of Steaz Teaz are USDA organic and are brewed with Fair Trade Certified™ ingredients. They are blended with a touch of pure, organic cane juice and natural flavor.

I picked four different flavors to try; all of them with green tea. I am partial to green tea. One of the Teaz I purchased was the Zero Calorie Half & Half (green tea with lemonade). I could tell that it had a little bit of the "diet" taste to it, but I really enjoyed it. It is one of the better tasting zero calorie drinks I have tried.
The other three flavors I tried were part of the regular line of Teaz. Two of them I absolutely loved and was sad as the last drop left the can. The Peach was flavorful and refreshing. The Super Fruit was delicious and crisp, with just the right blend of fruit flavors.
I am sorry to say that I did not like the Green Tea Unsweetened with Lemon. I think this may be partially due to the fact that I drank it last. After all the tremendous rich fruit flavorings of the previous drinks, the last one lacked the full flavoring I had come to love.

Wexy Bags

Wexy Lunch and Munch bags are such a cute idea. The makers of this product are mommies like us. They made the bags because they wanted to get their kids excited about healthy snacks.  The bags have funny little monsters on them, making them appealing to kids. The website has cute bios for each monster. 

Here's what I like about the WEXY Lunch and Munch Snack Bags for Kids Lunch Boxes. They are opaque so you can surprise your kids when you give them snacks. I look forward to using them in my sons' lunches during the school year. I will probably use some of the snacks from Wexy's free e-book.

Okay, you know how I love a company that supports the environment. The Wexy manufacturers say that their bags are "biodegradable, BPA Free, disposable, recyclable, and reusable". What's not to love?!

Big House Wines

Have you ever strolled down the wine aisle in the grocery store and looked at the labels? Some are classy, some plain, and some are just downright funny. It can be such an adventure to try a wine based on the label that intrigues you the most! And I do it all the time. Unfortunately, the wine doesn't always taste as good as the label looks. That is not the case with Big House Wines.

Big House Wine Company is located in Soledad, CA next to a correctional facility; hence the name. The labels are hilarious! All the wines have funny jailhouse names such as Cardinal Zin and The Slammer Sweet Shiraz. The labels on the back of the bottle have cute little stories that go with the name of the wine. All their wines come in 750ml bottles and come with a screw cap closure. I know screw caps have gotten a bad rap; but in this case the wine is really good. And you don't have to deal with a corkscrew. They also come in 3L premium wine casks, which reduces packaging waste by 92%.  (I get to drink wine and be eco-friendly; I'm sold!) They also happen to be extremely affordable, which is important to me being in a one income household. A 750ml bottle is approximately ten dollars.

As a ten dollar bottle of wine, we are not expecting to compare it to a 100 dollar Bordeaux. But it does compare favorably with other wines in this price range. I am a white wine drinker and my husband likes red. So we both got to sample some of our favorite flavors. The Birdman Pinot Grigio was crisp and delicious and I was sad when it was gone (after a couple of days, I'm not a lush.) The subtle citrus flavor of the Pinot was wonderful. My husband tried the Usual Suspect Cabernet Sauvignon. It has low acidity and is not too dry; which makes it an easy drinking Cab. "It has the mellowness that is reminiscent of a Merlot, but with more body." These wine would be great to pair with meals, or enjoy while sitting on the couch watching the monkeys (kids) play.

The Perplexus Original

This is a quote taken from the back of the box. And my family agrees. The Perplexus Maze Original
is a maze ball around the size of a basketball. It is meant for children six and older. (They make the
Perplexus Rookie too, which is for younger children.) It has a little silver ball that the player tries to move around on a track without letting it fall. It is colorful and inviting; making children want to pick it up immediately. (I'll admit, the grownups like it too.) It is portable and quiet, making it easy to bring on trips. It sells for approximately $25, however, I have been able to find it for about $15.

Ideally, you would want to buy this game for children over six. It requires that a child be able to count up to 100. The directions on the box are in three languages, English, Spanish, and French; but any child who can read numbers can play it. This puzzle is fun for all types of kids. However, since it is challenging, you would want to monitor the frustration level. My nine year old son has Asperger's Syndrome and he had approximately the same frustration level that my five year old son had. They both kept having to start over and would get mad. Then, they would pick it back up again and start over. They literally could not put it down! "I have to do this mom!"

At first when we got the box, we didn't read the directions and just started moving it around. I then picked up the box and read the directions on the back. It was then that we realized that you needed to count in a certain order. My older son, immediately liked it better when I told him this. My 5 year old still prefers to play it without the numbers (fine with me.) I tried to play it too, but the numbers were hard for this old lady to read. Once I moved into better light, I found this game to be really fun. 

I then began to wonder what would happen once my sons mastered it. Would it then collect dust? So, I went to the Perplexus webpage. I was happy to discover that there were several ideas for both single player and multi-players; as well as Freestyle. It's nice to know that I will be able to teach my kids other ways to play.

As a mom of a special needs child, I would recommend this product for several reasons. First, it is easy to use and does not require major gross motor skills. Even my toddler was able to move the little silver ball along the track for a little while. Second, the design of the ball makes it easy to hold. There is a little bar around the outside of the ball that serves as a handle. Furthermore, I especially like that it is mentally challenging; allowing the kids to work through their frustrations in a fairly controlled environment.
